Russian threat should focus minds on cyber security

Recent announcements from the UK government have highlighted growing concerns around disinformation campaigns, cyber-attacks, and the increasing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in both writes Marketing Manager Abbey Wright. Speaking at the United Nations, Prime Minister Andy Burnham warned that hostile actors are using AI, bots, fake websites, and manipulated content to spread misinformation, influence public opinion, and target organisations and institutions.
While much of the discussion focuses on national security and international relations, there are important lessons for businesses too.
Cyber criminals are increasingly using AI-powered tools to make their attacks more convincing and harder to detect. From realistic phishing emails and fake websites to deepfake videos and cloned voices, AI is making it easier for attackers to impersonate trusted organisations and manipulate people into revealing sensitive information.
For businesses, this means that traditional cyber security measures alone may no longer be enough. While technology plays a vital role in protecting systems and data, employees remain one of the most important lines of defence. A well-crafted phishing email or fraudulent request can still cause significant damage if staff are not trained to recognise the warning signs.
So, what can organisations do to stay cyber safe?
Firstly, ensure strong cyber security fundamentals are in place. Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus provide a solid foundation by helping organisations implement key security controls, including secure configuration, access controls, malware protection, patch management, and firewalls.
Secondly, invest in cyber security awareness training. Employees should be regularly educated on phishing attacks, social engineering tactics, and how to identify suspicious emails, websites, and messages. As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, awareness training is more important than ever.
As AI technology continues to evolve, it will bring both opportunities and risks. By taking a proactive approach to cyber security, businesses can reduce their exposure to emerging threats and ensure they remain resilient in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
If you’d like to strengthen your cyber security posture, our team can help with Cyber Essentials, Cyber Essentials Plus, vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, Defence Cyber Certification and cyber security awareness training.
